10 things to do in Thessaloniki while on your fertility journey

Thessaloniki, the second biggest city of Greece, and for many the most beautiful! There is an ongoing battle between Athenians and Thessalonians on which city is the best to live in, and Thessalonians won’t change Thessaloniki for any other city in the world. We also have many differences in our dialect, but that is something you’ll discover when you visit both cities. Before pointing out 10 must-do things in the city while on your fertility journey, let’s see why Thessaloniki is considered a top fertility destination and such an important city overall.

The city offers some top-notch clinics for your fertility treatment, like Assisting Nature and Newlife IVF. There you can perform with good success rates IVF, ICSI, egg freezing etc. The doctors are highly experienced and always up to speed with the latest scientific discoveries. Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. Much of the city center was unfortunately destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917, but the rebuilt 20th-century city has now a more modern European layout. The city functions as a commercial, business and transportation hub for that side of Greece, and it is one of the liveliest places to visit!

  • And because we talked about the liveliest place, we couldn’t not start the list with Ladadika! Ladadika is a historic part of the city, where in ancient times was one of the most important business centers. Nowadays it hosts many bars, restaurants, clubs and every one that lives in Thessaloniki and respects himself has at least once visited the place. When you visit the area, mind the beautiful Thessalonians women who are maybe overdressed for their coffee but totally stunning no matter what!

  • Archaeological Museum. For history lovers, the museum holds and interprets artifacts from the Prehistoric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, mostly from the city of Thessaloniki but also from the region of Macedonia in general. Good to know: from 1/11 to 31/3 the ticket costs only 4 euros!
  • The white tower, The most famous monument, you surely can’t miss while on your fertility journey in Thessaloniki. The White Tower was built in the fifteenth century after the fall of Thessaloniki to the Ottomans in 1430. It is a circular tower of seven floors, including the ground floor. From an architectural standpoint, the Tower’s construction consists of two cylinders, an outer and an inner one. The outer cylinder rises as far as the fifth story; the inner cylinder is one story taller and thus a terrace is formed on the exterior that offers an exceptionally fine view of the city and Mountain Olympus. Since 5 September 2008, the White Tower has housed the new permanent exhibition on Thessaloniki from the age of its founding in 316/15 B.C. to the present. A must visit on the 6th floor, where you’ll see how some of the most famous and delicious food products of Thessaloniki are made.

  • Ancient Agora. The Roman Forum aka Ancient Agora, is the largest archaeological site in Thessaloniki. Locals love this part of the city because it’s more quiet and filled with eclectic shops, and neoclassical buildings. There is an underground museum there which you can visit for a small entrance fee and throughout the year many concerts and happenings are hosted so as to make you feel like a true ancient Roman!
  • Rotonda Monument/ Arch of Galerius. The Arch or just Kamara for the locals is a meeting point for their evening walks, and it was constructed in 305 AD to celebrate and commemorate the final victory of Roman general Galerius over the Persians. The Rotonda was constructed by the Roman general Galerius around 300 AD and in the late 4th century AD, it was turned into a Christian church. When the town was conquered by the Ottomans, Rotonda was turned into a mosque. In the early 19th century it became a church again and then a sculpture museum.
  • Church of Agios Dimitrios. The most famous church in the city. It dates back to the Byzantine Times and it was built on the exact location where Agios Dimitrios was martyred. In fact, the basement of the church is the place where the saint was tortured for his faith and died.
  • Caste of Thessaloniki. Or Yedi Kule or Heptapyrgion. It is located on a hill above Old Town, and offers a majestic view of the city, the port and the Aegean Sea. Don’t miss it at sunset!
