What is Ovarian Rejuvenation?

Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy is an innovative therapeutic method that contributes to the balance of FSH, E2, AMH, LH hormonal levels, impacting the reconstitution of the menstrual cycle, even if it has already stopped. Ovarian PRP can turn back the fertility clock for women who have experienced early menopause. It is a treatment that can help women achieve pregnancy naturally or with some help from other fertility treatments such as IVF or IUI. In other words, Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy is a newly pioneered procedure and also a ground-breaking affordable method that can help women have a biological child!

Are there any implications or side effects?

The risks of this treatment are very similar to an egg retrieval procedure that usually takes place within the in Vitro Fertilization process and are minimal. Some of the rare side effects some people notice after the procedure are pain, fever, and some internal bleeding that usually diminish approximately 1-2 hours after the patient is administered oral pain medication.

How Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy is performed? Is one round of treatment enough to see results?

The procedure of Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy takes approximately 2 hours. The preparation of the patient’s PRP takes less than one hour and the next part of the ovarian rejuvenation process is the injection of the PRP into the ovaries using a non-surgical, transvaginal ultrasound-guided injection performed under light sedation.

There are two phases in the ovarian rejuvenation process:

  1. The preparation of the patient’s PRP: This is a simple process, which involves the collection of the patient’s several blood tubes through the insertion of a needle into the vein. Then, white globules and platelets are separated from red blood cells and serum through a procedure called centrifugation. This first step of the ovarian rejuvenation process takes in total less than an hour.
  2. The injection of PRP into the ovaries: The doctors cooperating with MEDIPASS are among the pioneers in ovarian rejuvenation who use a non-surgical approach to ovarian injections. The technique that they have developed to inject the cells into the ovaries is a nonsurgical, transvaginal ultrasound- guided injection performed under sedation with an anesthetic agent called Propofol. This process is similar to the one used for an egg retrieval in the In Vitro Fertilization. Experience shows that this approach is less invasive, safer, and has a shorter, more comfortable recovery.

It has been suggested that one round of treatment has been enough for a woman to experience the benefits of the treatment and it takes approximately 2 to 24 weeks for them to show.

Some of the results are the following:

  • Symptoms of menopause will lessen
  • Periods will return to normal
  • Increase in sexual drive
  • Improved quality of eggs

Most of the patients have also noticed that the therapeutic effects of the treatment lasts 5 to 7 months.

What is the follow-up procedure for women coming from abroad?

For all the patients coming from abroad to get the Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy done in our cooperating clinics in Greece will provide instructions and advice on follow-up, monitoring of pregnancy, and care. Patients can be monitored weekly in their home country for a month with blood tests for levels of certain reproductive hormones, including Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Estradiol (E2), and sometimes AMH. A vaginal ultrasound is also performed at the time of the blood test in order to count the number of follicles inside the ovaries. It is important to remember that any therapeutic effect of growth factors may require 3-6 months to be observed since any type of tissue transformation will not be immediately apparent.

Is Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy beneficial for everyone?

In general, Ovarian Rejuvenation Therapy doesn’t have an age limit and is considered to be very safe for everybody. Although, it is worth mentioning that the best candidates to get the Ovarian PRP treatment are:

  • Women typically younger than 40 with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
  • Women with early peri-menopause
  • Women who have a low ovarian reserve and those with low Anti-Mullerian (AMH) hormone (AMH) levels
  • Menopausal or perimenopausal women under the age of 50 years

It is important also to mention that there are some factors that can contribute to the success or the failure of the treatment and it shows that age and ovarian functionality have a significant impact here.

The lowest rates of success are shown by patients who are already in menopause and who haven’t had a cycle for a few years. For instance, someone who’s entered menopause at the age of 45 and they’re trying this treatment at the age of 55. In this case, it’s been ten years since any kind of activity in the ovary. At the same time, patients who had menstrual cycles up until recently or patients who still have their menstrual cycles but have significantly reduced ovarian function can still have better results. Also, a better outcome will have someone who is 35 years old with premature ovarian failure than someone who is 50 and has a natural course of ovarian failure.

Is ovarian rejuvenation safe?

Injections of growth factors are currently used for several types of medical treatments with impressive results! Their great advantage is that they are made from a patient’s own blood and blood cells, so there is no possibility of virus transmissions via inserting in the human body the blood of another person, such as hepatitis or HIV. Furthermore, since no synthetic chemicals are involved and the PRP therapy is done from the patient’s own blood products, the possibility of an allergic reaction is extremely unlikely.
